• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Don Quixote -- An Immigrant's Journey : Back in 2003, I set out on a journey that has taken me to many wonderful places: I challenged myself to read at least one book by every winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Because I read many other authors along the way, it took me 13 years to catch up and arrive at a point where I simply waited for the next winner to be announced. When I heard the news two weeks ago, I visited my local library’s website and searched for Abdulrazak Gurnah’s name. I’ll admit I had not heard of him before, but I was happy to see that my library owned copies of two of his novels, _By the Sea_ (2001) and _Gravel Heart_ (2017). The former was longlisted for the Booker Prize and is considered to be one of Gurnah’s best, so that was my initial choice, but alas, someone had already placed a hold on it, so I settled for _Gravel Heart_ instead. I enjoyed this novel very much, and even identified with it on many levels, despite the fact that I come from a very different background than that of the protagonist. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from L. Gallier -- Lyric, character-driven coming of age story of expatriate life, revolution, family, and betrayal. : I loved this book. It starts out slowly, so I had to start it more than once, and I'm glad I did. The language grabbed me first - almost like poetry. Then I began to connect with the characters. The main character, Salim, is an introvert, like me, and I enjoyed his observations about people and human nature, the things he wondered about and the dots he connected between how people - individually and as a society - behaved and what they said about themselves. I was particularly interested in his observations of the various political leaders, from the colonizers, to the locals who took control after the revolution, to the British when he moved to London. I didn't detect a hint of a plot for the first 175 pages, but I was caught up in his experience as an expat of Zanzibar - Zanzibar! - living in London. I noticed that the other reviews are not as favorable as mine. Maybe I loved it more than I normally would have because a friend of mine is studying the African diaspora, and this little story helps me feel a part of that work. I was curious about how he felt living in London, home of the colonial oppressors he despised and distrusted, his experience as a black man, an African man, a Muslim, a poor man, an immigrant in London, and how he felt about home - about where home is when no place feels like home. The writing style and the depictions of character and family remind me of Sebastian Barry, a favorite author. I wish now that I were more familiar with Shakespeare, who also plays an important part in the story. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2017 )

It was awesome to read about different cultures and see how other people lived in the 70's. The book was well written, taking me through Salim's life as he struggles with his father's distance, to his mother's suspected infidelity and the move the London with his uncle. The emotions are raw and the story doesn't hold back. Gurnah has shared a story that will touch many lives and open the eyes of the world to the struggles of different cultures. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C.Campbell -- The worm in the heart of love and exile : This moving book has the quality of a Shakespearean tragedy, in it exploration of the traps, disappointments and betrayals at the heart of love, and the pain and emotional paralysis of exile. A young Zanzibari man goes to England as a student, and stays on, despite never feeling he belongs there. Over the course of the novel, he gradually learns the extraordinarily sad history of his parents’ lives, separation and deaths in the context of the wider aftermath of colonialism in Tanzania. His inexplicable self-imposed exile in England mirrors the outsider status he had in his own family and his own country. He will never belong, his loneliness is his birthright. Mirza -- A Powerful and poignant novel : Set in Zanzibar and London this is a wonderfully written and poignant novel, possibly Gurnah's best since 'Paradise'--and that is high praise. It tells a story of secrets gradually uncovered, of relationships destroyed and gradually restored and deepened. I was totally enthralled by this novel. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Yug -- Beautifully written : I found this a most interesting book. At least in part it reflects the authors personal experiences. I have considerable sympathy with this since I come from Kenya and went to London as a very unsophisticated young man, so I can relate to some if not all the main character's reaction to being in London. There was a bit too much about the main character's father, which I didn't think was necessary in quite such detail. Not withstanding that I enjoyed reading the book.
