• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ricky_SthLanarkshire -- Justice for Margaret? : As a Carluke native (I actually lived on the opposite side of the road from Margaret), I hope this book forces the Scottish 'justice' system to investigate & finally get proper justice for Margaret & her family. GB was a 'patsy', fitted up to protect a record, and an easy target to manipulate. I don't believe anyone in Carluke accepted he did the crime. Once I started reading this book, I carried on until finished. The subsequent appeal cases would have been embarrassing for the Police if the truth came out regarding how this was handled! • 3.0 out of 5 stars from A reader -- Maybe could have reduced in to a pamphlet? : The book runs to about 250 pages, but the actually coverage of the murder could be covered in around 100. It's padded out by three things: firstly a description of Carluke then and now. I hope I don't sound too rude to the people of Carluke, but it hardly held my interest (I'm a native of a similar Scottish town , though in Ayrshire). Even this was rather cliche-ridden: working class community, devastated by the policies of you-know-who Tory Prime Minister, but with people who are the salt of the earth types, whom our David loves to come home to. Secondly, and like one of David Wilson's documentaries, round and round and round we go, repeating the same information as if we are all a bit hard of thinking or just tuned in half way through, so let's retell it all again. And thirdly the bold David does of a high opinion of himself -what we might call in Scotland "the unco guid", and he does like to tell us a lot obout what criminal theories he has come up with, and who he has worked with, and where he has worked and so on. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from SE_Reader -- Confusing purpose - disappointing writing : It seems that the author has fallen between the the multiple stools of a memoir, a social commentary and a piece of criminology writing and, unfortunately, landed on the ground with a bump. Combining a hotchpotch of socioeconomic observations of lowland Scotland, ramblings on the deep impact of gender inequality with a well-intended but misguided attempt to lift a group of voices (which ultimately only serves to reinforce privilege and power), and a piece of made-for-tv criminology writing which seems to fall short of both ethical and evidential standards. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from originalisa -- insightful exploration into criminology and a possible miscarriage of justice. : David Wilson has produced what is probably his best book to date in this gripping analysis of this murder and the possible miscarriage of justice that led to a Carluke man being detained. David Wilson, well known for his many appearances on TV crime documentaries, rivets the reader with not just his investigation into this crime but his knowledge of criminology in general, he guides the reader on a journey to find out the truth and along that way reveals key factors in criminology and social psychology which will not only appeal to the true crime reader but anyone who is studying criminology. He also adds at the the back of the tome, a detailed section on further reading covering so many aspects of criminology, policing, psychology and much more. The crime itself is a sad one which has not been fully resolved for many and David Wilson digs some uncomfortable depths to get to the truth as close as it is possible to do so given that almost 50 years have now elapsed and the grass is growing on the landscape of this small lowland town in Lanarkshire. I found it fascinating reading and hope that David Wilson will go on to uncover some of the unsolved cases that have eluded the best minds for decades.
